A Daytrip
Story About the Walk to a Condornest
by Jan Kuijt
Toccto cocha – Early in the morning 7.00 am …We took the bus and went up to our goal , a remote location high in the mountains . When we passed Quinua, we had to stop, because the bus was leaking water.... |

During the waiting time , we had some Juju , a traditional dish of this district and bought some water with herbals against highness and gastritis.
We got back in the bus and had a good talk with a mystical man about the historical past of the Incas After some time we got of the bus and walked trough the inspiring landscape at an altitude of 4300 meters.
When we arrived at the mountain lake , we had a little talk with the local workers of the trout farm there. After some small talk we started our first climb of the day.
Every 10 steps our hearts went in overdrive and we had to stop 10 seconds to regain our breath. Meanwhile two condors were flirting with the air currents on the other side of the mountain pass. Finally we reached a passage from where it was possible to see the second lake and the cliffs with the condor nest. We descented into the craterlike shape down to the lake, and entered a world of silence. What a magnificent view and feeling…

On the other side of the lake the climbing started again, until we came to a cave where the shining path had its hospital to take cover for the Peruvian army . Here we went up and climbed our way out to the roof of the cave. There we found out that we had to climb much more to see the condor nest close by. We went up and up, and after we crossed a big part of single rock we reached the same level of the condor nest , at probably 4700 meters high. Unfortunately we didn’t see the condors then , but we had a nice rest up there in the sun. We had some chocolate to regain energy and enjoyed the view . Everybody was overwelmed by the surroundings .
After a while we went down on the other side of the lake and followed the horse path down. We passed the mountain peak on our right side , saw another valley on our left side and reached the street to Ayacucho and the trout farm.
We hitchhiked our way back to Ayacucho ; we where tired but in good spirits and had lots of clean air in our lungs. It had been a good day |
